Synopsis

Set in a mental hospital, the play centers around two women, Esme and Shaz, who form an unlikely friendship within the confines of the institution. Esme is an older woman, institutionalized for her non-conformist behavior and perceived as being ‘mad’ for challenging societal norms. Shaz, on the other hand, is a young, rebellious woman, committed for her disruptive behavior and drug use.

Their bond becomes a lens through which Daniels scrutinises the psychiatric system, exposing how it often pathologizes non-conforming behavior, especially in women. The play delves into the subjective nature of ‘madness’ and critiques the ways in which society seeks to control and define women who deviate from expected norms.

Esme and Shaz, with their contrasting backgrounds and reasons for confinement, represent different aspects of rebellion against a system that marginalizes those who do not fit within its narrow definitions of ‘normalcy.’ Their interaction, filled with dark humor and poignant moments, sheds light on the broader issues of female autonomy, mental health, and the power dynamics within psychiatric care.
